Before Replacing Lamps in a High Ceiling
Start by identifying the existing fixtures and lamps. The replacement must suit the housing, connections, clearance, and controls, not just the ceiling height.
For difficult-to-access fixtures, gather the available equipment records and have the appropriate installer confirm the details before purchasing replacements.
What to Confirm Before Ordering
Replacing lamps in high-mounted church fixtures can require specialized access and coordination. Gather these details before ordering to help your team compare compatible products and avoid unnecessary return visits.
1. Existing Lamp and Fixture
Record the current lamp model, wattage, PAR size, and, when available, the fixture manufacturer. A fixture label, equipment schedule, or maintenance record may provide this information.
2. Socket and Connection
Identify the existing socket or connector. Photos can help distinguish between different connection arrangements. Confirm that the replacement configuration suits the actual installation.
3. Dimmer and Controls
Document the dimmer or control equipment, including its make and model if possible. Confirm the selected lamp’s approved electrical and dimming requirements before ordering.
4. Mounting and Clearance
Confirm the space available inside the existing housing, mounting position, and applicable clearance requirements. A matching lamp size or base alone does not guarantee a suitable fit.
5. Distance and Light Coverage
Estimate the distance from the fixture to the pulpit, platform, choir, or other area being illuminated. Note whether the current problem involves dark spots, insufficient output, or overly broad coverage.
6. Quantity and Maintenance Access
Record approximately how many fixtures need replacement and whether access requires a lift, scaffold, or other specialized equipment. This helps plan purchasing and coordinate the work.
Retrofit Options for Existing High-Ceiling PAR Fixtures
If your church already has suitable PAR can fixtures, an LED retrofit lamp may let you keep the existing housing while updating the light source.
PAR LED Lights offers HyLite Lotus retrofit lamps with selectable white-light settings. The correct family depends on the installed fixture, not the ceiling height alone.
PAR56 LED Retrofits
For compatible existing PAR56 fixtures, the Lotus lamp family provides selectable 40W/60W output and 3000K, 4000K, and 5000K white-light settings.
Compare the available beam-angle and connector versions before ordering. Confirm physical fit and control compatibility for the selected configuration.
PAR64 LED Retrofits
For compatible existing PAR64 fixtures, the Lotus lamp family provides selectable 100W/150W output and 3000K, 4000K, and 5000K white-light settings.
Review the available beam-angle and connector versions, fixture clearance, and approved installation requirements before purchasing.
Important: A high ceiling does not automatically call for PAR64 rather than PAR56. Identify the installed fixture and connection first. Beam selection and output come next.
High Ceiling Lighting Installation and Maintenance
Maintenance access is a major consideration when fixtures are mounted above sanctuary seating, platforms, balconies, or other difficult-to-reach locations. Planning ahead can help reduce unnecessary visits and service interruptions.
Confirm These Details Before the Installer Accesses the Fixtures
Selected Lamp and Connection
Confirm the replacement model, beam-angle version, connector configuration, and required components. Have the applicable manufacturer information available before the installation begins.
Installation Requirements
Have a qualified installer verify electrical supply, existing controls, mounting arrangement, fixture condition, clearance, and the approved installation instructions for the selected lamp.
Access and Project Scheduling
Coordinate the number and location of fixtures, appropriate access equipment, qualified personnel, and a suitable service window. Churches may want to schedule work around worship services, school activities, and events.
For general background, see our
PAR Can Installation Guide.
Always follow the approved documentation for the exact product, and have appropriately qualified personnel perform electrical work.
Why Replacement Planning Matters More in High-Ceiling Spaces
When a lamp is easily reached, an incorrect replacement can be inconvenient. When the fixture is high above a sanctuary floor, accessing it again may require another equipment rental, a service appointment, and disruption to normal activities.
Compatible longer-life LED retrofits can reduce the frequency of lamp changes and may lower energy use compared with older high-wattage halogen lighting. Confirming fit, output, and controls before purchasing helps make those benefits more achievable.
