Old PAR Cans, New Possibilities

Lotus LED Lamps Earn High Marks in Worship Review

Before you replace every fixture above your stage, take a closer look at what’s inside the cans.

For churches, school chapels, and community theaters, the HyLite Lotus Lamp offers a different approach to LED lighting: upgrade the light source while retaining compatible existing PAR fixtures. That retrofit-first philosophy is the focus of a Technologies for Worship review, and a main reason we offer PAR56 LED retrofit lamps and PAR64 LED retrofit lamps at PAR LED Lights.

The question is no longer simply, “What should replace our old lighting system?” It is worth asking, “How much of our existing system could we keep?”

Putting the Lotus Lamp to the Test

In the Technologies for Worship review, Kent Sheets, Plant Services Director at Portland Adventist Academy, evaluated Lotus lamps in a chapel equipped with approximately 20-year-old PAR56 cans.

That setting makes the review especially relevant to organizations considering an upgrade. Rather than designing a lighting system from scratch, Sheets was exploring how to improve equipment already in service.

The review highlighted the value of bringing LED technology into those existing fixtures. Systems integrator Tim Adams described the approach as a “game-changer” for smaller churches, schools, and community theaters looking to modernize without the expense of replacing an entire lighting grid.

The Technologies for Worship Report Card

“Easily the best combination of cost, value, and end user utility I have come across.”

For a facility weighing lighting improvements against other budget priorities, that combination deserves attention.

Upgrade the Lamp, Not the Entire Fixture

An older lighting fixture doesn’t necessarily need to be discarded.

The Lotus Lamp is designed to retrofit compatible PAR56 and PAR64 cans, allowing the existing housing to remain part of the installation. HyLite’s retrofit instructions show how the lamp connects through a GX16D adapter and is secured inside a suitable PAR can retrofit kit structure.

The right installation can change the project scope. Instead of assuming that every fixture must be replaced, a facility can evaluate what is still usable and focus its spending on the components that need improvement.

At PAR LED Lights, we help customers work through that decision by considering fixture type, beam angle, connectors, mounting height, and dimming requirements. Learn more in our PAR lamp guide. The goal is not simply to sell a replacement lamp; it is to help identify the right retrofit for the space.

What Lower Wattage Looks Like

HyLite publishes an efficacy rating of up to 166 lumens per watt for the PAR56 Lotus Lamp, with selectable 40W and 60W settings. The manufacturer positions the 60W setting as a replacement option for suitable 500W halogen applications (see our PAR halogen replacement guide for complete wattage comparisons).

The potential difference becomes easier to appreciate when you look beyond a single lamp.

Over an assumed 1,000 operating hours, that difference represents 8,800 fewer kilowatt-hours of lighting electricity.

Choose the Light Your Space Needs

The current PAR56 and PAR64 Lotus lamps offer selectable output and white color temperature, along with several beam-angle versions. This gives facilities options to match the lamp to the application rather than settle for a single fixed configuration.

These are the current product specifications for the two families.

Wattage and white color temperature are selectable within each lamp. Beam angle is chosen when ordering. The 15° version provides a spot beam, while the 25°, 40°, and 120° versions provide progressively broader distributions. These are selectable-white lighting products, not RGB color-changing fixtures.

For your project, start with the area you need to illuminate, the distance from the fixture, and the lighting effect you want to achieve.

Dimming Deserves a Real-World Check

A lighting upgrade should work during quiet transitions and bright, full-output moments.

Both the PAR56 and PAR64 Lotus families offer TRIAC and 0–10V dimming options. The appropriate wiring and control method depend on the installation; HyLite provides separate diagrams for each approach.

Before committing to a full upgrade, consider evaluating a sample with your actual fixture and dimmer. Run it through the fades and lighting levels your team uses regularly. For venues that record or livestream, check it through your own cameras.

That small evaluation can help answer an important question: does the proposed lamp perform the way your particular space needs it to?

Designed to Reduce Repeated Relamping

The Lotus Lamp’s appeal extends beyond its power consumption. HyLite advertises a rated life of up to 60,000 hours, with specifications noting that service life depends on the installation’s ambient temperature. The PAR56 design also uses passive cooling without moving parts.

For lighting installed above a sanctuary or stage, consider less frequent relamping alongside energy savings.

Give Your Existing PAR Cans a Second Look

The most interesting part of the Lotus Lamp story is not just what the lamp can replace. It is what a suitable retrofit lets you keep.

For compatible PAR56 and PAR64 installations, the Lotus Lamp lets you add selectable LED lighting to existing fixtures without starting over with an entirely new system.

At PAR LED Lights, our team can help you compare lamp sizes, beam angles, connectors, and dimming requirements. Share your fixture details, mounting height, approximate quantity, and lighting goals, and we’ll help you evaluate your options.
